Sweet X Manila | The Last Burger Run

When news came out that one of the local burger joints in Makati would be closing its old location after 12 years of serving their loyal customers, and today was the last chance to have that nostalgia again is something you had to do to support them. This was one of Sweet X Manila’s older branches.

They’ve been in this location since opening it as their second store in 2014. Most of their current locations are now set indoors.

This one had the outdoor feel to it, and yet the experience should be upgraded to be set indoors as well. Basically, they are moving this store to a location a few doors down on Jupiter Street.

I haven’t been in this store for almost eight years, not because the price of their menu has changed significantly. But the location is considered off the grid and not your usual route from places coming from Taguig or coming from the north via the MRT-3 line. Though the train station is accessible, it’s off the way from where I’d go.

The place is buzzing since the announcement of the closure of this old location, and they won’t announce the opening of the new place until 2-3 weeks from now. When I got to the place, there was no table available, and the best decision, personally, was to have the food for take-away since it’s a long wait for the food to be served.

Lively to the last Burger served

It’s not your usual location to visit unless you’re aware of its existence and you live within the geography of Makati City; it is worth the visit. But they have four other locations that are either in a shopping centre or have a similar off-grid location like this one at Jupiter Street.

The wait is worth it because of the quality of the food they serve, and it’s worth noting how, for some, it’s an excruciating experience. But the red walls and graphic art hanging on the wall can ease those tensions while you wait for your juicy burgers and those bright yellow, well-cooked fries.

Taking Home with Quality

After grabbing the takeaway meal, I said my ‘hellos’ and ‘goodbyes’ to some familiar faces, including one of the owners of the store. In an unexpected moment, I get to also take home a commemorative print of the old location that would go to the collected art binder that I’ve been managing to consolidate all the stuff that some would say ‘junk’ memorabilia from the past.

The brown paper bag with the red ‘X’ is certainly a simple branding that makes their product familiar in the eyes. What makes it extra special is how they packed the food. There’s no loose food in the bag, and all tight and taped up. Carrying it for the next 40-minute walk back was a convenience since I wasn’t carrying a backpack.

The Food is in the Details

Their food is quite photogenic for the social media savvy of a foodie. It’s kind of weird and great to see how the texture of the burger is like it came out of their poster. It’s not just about substance, but also the appearance makes you want to stare a bit longer before you go for the kill. The Fantastic Fries are really that… Fantastic! Having to consume it slowly is how I waited long for them to prepare it.

You can never go wrong with the quality of the burger, and it really hits where the sweet moment of ecstasy is worth the price of admission. This is beyond nostalgia, just for the burgers and their other food.

Congrats to Sweet X Manila, and thank you for your service these past 14 years at the old location. I’m certainly looking forward to dining in at the new place soon.
