SM Eats | Fried Gyōza

Fried Gyōza is a Japansese variant of a Chinese Dumpling known as Jiaozi, which has become a staple favourite dish all over Asia. Its popularity has produced variations and interpretations of other countries that included Japan as mentioned, which in time became a part of a menu in some food establishments in the Philippines.

With SM Market’s Save More continuous expansion and evolution in making their in-house rice meals that would include a Gyōza dish that would be either served for dine-in or by take away was included in their menu. Though most would pay for a Veggie Lumpia or a Turon snack, this was surprisingly popular to some who have no time to look for a dish elsewhere. But of course you got to try and give your own experience having it.

The SM Eats portfolio in the SM Groups’ brand for their Grocery and Supermarket had slowly evolved into having their in-house diner that featured Filipino-inspired dishes that included other rice meals influenced by other Asian Countries. Originally, SM Hypermart and SM SM Markets have put up their dine-in section near their grocery entrance aside from other establishments.

SM started experimenting and putting up original Filipino Street Food, which over time had slowly been retired or discontinued. With that, they have to put up other dishes that would keep their service relevant by adding new rice meals for the walk-in consumer or just there to purchase their grocery needs by adding this option of their in-house fast food restaurant.

Filipino-style Gyōza

You’d hope for something quality put in their rice meals, but it’s a matter of how well you’ll be having the experience in taking a Gyōza rice meal home and having it prepared for lunch like it was served fresh as the way you wanted to be.

But not all rice meals are the same as just loading them up in a microwave oven in comparing to their competitors that has already discovered how to produce food items that would still be fresh upon being taken home.

Dumpling Moments

There’s a bit of challenge in producing authentic Asian cuisine like the Gyōza, and some might find a way to replicate the taste and textures, while there are others try to pass it up as the way it is and this is one of those iffy things you’d hope would be getting an improvements.

In the perspective it you’d hope this is an authentic Asia dish, but it appears to be half hazard for just being affordable at the same time lose its quality aspects turning into something else and yet the name stuck.

Overall it was just an Asian dish feeling that is an alternative when you are short for time and have no luxury to cook lunch. The appearance is not what you hoped for, but knowing this was one of those affordable quick meals you’ll understand that there’s no expectations.

But rather have it for what it is and move on to better things, and that’s why it wasn’t the Gyōza that you know and yet it filled your tummy despite not the authentic dumpling dish that was highly advertised.

  • Food Quality: 3 out of 5
  • Affordability: B
  • Overall: They need to re-work their rice meals as they look distinctly generic with no identity other than the name of the dish, while their Vegetable Lumpia and Turon Langka is getting sold out.
