Foodie Spotlight | Bagnet + Kare-Kare

Home cooking is something different and it is a labour of adoration that shows why it becomes comfort food for everyone. In the Philippines, there is A LOT of comfort food to go around and it never stops there once you find something that is worth calling it as such that it is something you look forward to having whenever you can.

In the case of a Bagnet, it is a Filipino dish locally known as “Chicharon” (Fried Pork Rinds) in the native province of Ilocos. Mostly it is Pork Belly ***boiled and deep fried until it is crispy. It is seasoned with garlic, black peppercorns, bay leaves, and salt. The meat is first boiled and then allowed to thoroughly dry overnight before frying to achieve its characteristic chicharon-like texture.

Then there’s a place called Bagnet 8065 Co, which has been around long enough to suite this author’s curiosity. First heard of this place back in 2018, but whenever plans to go about in trying to check this place it always ends with going someplace else or must have forgotten the plan to visit and try their Bsgnet.

But today was unexpected, turns out to be this was going to be the lunch that will give you “Putok Batok” (it is a Filipino sayings or phrase: refers to meals that may cause you to have a heart attack or stroke), which is something most people would say if they mention that they want Bagnet.

This two words stuck in most people’s mind whenever they want to have Bagnet, and unsurprisingly this was the lunch today. It is VERY Filipino when you try the local café’s most popular dish. Getting there was like just following what Google Map tells you and that was it when making it there.

Bagnet + another Dish

Despite the popularity of Bagnet it appears the localtion looks like a two-storey resident moonlighting as a café. But once you get in there it is a good place to spend your lunch or even having a night cap before they close up. But the heart of going to this local café is the Bagnet itself, and they have a list of dishes pairing it.

They have quite a list that going back the second time will be another story, and having it for take away for now is something to try it out. For this one, the Bagnet is paired with Lare-Kare that is something worth trying to see their take on another Filipino dish that will compliment this crunchy and meaty dish.

Almost Forgout the Bagnet

Upon getting back, and unpacked the brown paper baggy the Kare-Kare wasn’t packed in a plastic container but in a plastic bag, while the shrimp paste was more presentable in its tiny little container. The rice though was in a white rectangular box that for the minute there you’re thinking, this is it?

But of course, you forgot the reason why you have this meal is because of the Bagnet that is sliced and diced to the side occupying 40% percent of the container, while the 60% percent is that steamed white rice still warm from being transported in a presentable container and then you forgot how the Kare-Kare felt like an outcast.

Overall the Kare-Kare is good and you may think at first that the portion is small. But when you factor in that it has Bagnet you’ll forget it as you came for the crunchy meat and the Kare-Kare was just along for the ride. It was crunchy, juicy, and most notably will make you want to get a second cup of rice.

Also, you got to understand why the price point and it does not come with a dip for the Bsgnet. Good thing there’s Mang Tomas sauce waiting for it. The rest is certainly a blur once you just get the first bite and you will forget the time you consumed it because both dishes are terribly good.

  • Food Quality: 5 out of 5
  • Affordability: A
  • Overall: The buttery saucy goodness of the Kare-Kare is a compliment to the Bagnet, and the rice is not enough. The only thing that was not-so complimentary is the "Good For Two" does not include rice.
