Uma Delica | Katsu Curry

There’s nothing authentic than having your Japanese dish produced by the same establishments that’s sell products from Japan. Rarely, you’ll have that experience trying their dishes that are a little bit affordable than the premium restaurants that have the same dish only in the grander scale of things.

New Hatchin is just one of the many Japanese groceries that ever to carry and produce their ‘homemade style’ dishes from Japan, and that itself is a genuine at the same time affordable way to get the best from Japan. They have already expanded compared to the early 2000s and most would think that shopping at Japanese Supermarkets are exclusive only top ex-pats and tourist from that country.

Late last year they re-branded and had a major renovation in their store, which also makes their Japanese dishes bump up the price, and this is prior to inflation that is sweeping the planet. Sure, it is a challenging time to spend for more. But spending more once just to experience a little bit to at least have a go at one of their take away dishes is an opportunity to take advantage.

They have a wide variety of Japanese rice meals if you’ve have shopped for their world renowned ramen and cup noodles, maybe their in-house authentic Japanese rice meals would be something to try once in a while.

Katsu Curry-licious

There have been several variations of the Katsu Curry, and it’s not even a rice meal. But this one has been a personal staple on the lunch list. But due to the price changes it’s not all the time you’ll have it for your lunch time. Despite the price increase it is the usual one that you no longer see if you arrive late at New Hatchin by noon.

Most of the dishes are freshly cooked and vacuum wrapped then taken out on the shelves as early as 10 AM. The best ones often disappear already before 11 AM due to some of the popular Japanese dishes and this is one of them.

Crunchy Saucy Curry

For several times having this meal it is still the curry sauce that brings everything together, and that is why once you have opened it there’s a need to balance in consuming the katsu and making sure to finish the sauce too. Because the curry sauce is the heart of this meal.

Of course, the katsu slices is the one that compliments the sauce and it definitely shows why this dish is always sold out. The crunchy goodness is balanced by three slices of boiled egg and it really is that good not to miss out having this.

Overall it is still a personal favourite despite the bump up price, and you gotta need A LOT of rice to take the curry sauce out. It is one of the best dishes at New Hatchin and also a mid-level price goes a long way to have this one once in a while.

  • Food Quality: 4 out of 5
  • Affordability: B-
  • Overall: Crunchy Katsu strips and that sauce that all matters.
