Hotta Rice | Laing

“Laing” is a Filipino dish that has been quite a favourite among the locals that consist of shredded or whole taro leaves that have meat or seafood cooked in thick coconut milk spiced with labuyo chili, lemongrass, garlic, shallots, ginger, and shrimp paste. You can find it at Filipino themed restaurants, food stalls, and Jolijeeps.

With 7 Eleven, they have expanded the Hotta Rice meals with two additional choices from their ever grown budget meal friendly product that was revealed on social media earlier today and one of them is Laing, not to be confused with their Hotta Ulam that is entirely viands without rice. This one is a newly added rice meal to have for lunch.

Previously, there are only six choices under the Hotta Rice meals with the new addition of “Ginataang Lanka” (Jackfruit in Coconut Milk) and Laing (pronounced [ˈlaʔɪŋ] LAH-ing) it expands the product for those who doesn’t have time to cook or working in the office something to have not as a heavy or lite meal.

But just about the right budget meal on the go in-between a busy day or those have no time to prepare their meals. The product has been around and have made significant changes in the last three years maintaining six food choices for lunch.

Gotta be Laing

The new Laing has a different product aesthetics compared to the recent Hotta Rice with the image of the food and the giant word “LAING” in green background. It is the second 7 Eleven product to feature Laing, while the other is Pork Laing a viand and also a collaboration between a well-known restaurant from Cebu City.

You’ll immediately see the new meal with no product photo on the cover of the plastic lid, which makes you see the actual product. It is ready to heat in your microwave and preparation is quick and easy. Like most of the Hotta Rice meals comes separately packaged with the viand in a plastic microwaveable container.

Laing beside to Hold You

Usually, when you heat up the Hotta Rice, the rice and the viand are heated separately. It is better to pour in the viand on top of the rice and then let the microwave cook it together. Not all microwave ovens have the same settings except when you want the staff at 7 Eleven have it heated for you.

The texture is on point and it is mouthwatering if you haven’t had Laing in a long time, which definitely was something different from their other product. It is considered a vegetable meal and they made sure to balance the quality and the price of the food and the rice did not stand a chance.

Overall goodness in a new product that have been a local favourite and adds another choice to the ever expanding Hotta Rice meal. This one’s definitely going off their freezer shelf best served during lunch time and you may need more rice with that.

  • Food Quality: 5 out of 5
  • Affordability: A
  • Overall: Scraping the bottom that needs more rice.
